This poor woman had a horrific childhood, but is able to come out smarter than anyone in her whole family and make something of herself in this time period. Sad that people tore her apart for telling the truth, and tried to sweep it under the rug like it never happened or she never existed. Would love to find out more on what really happened to cause her to be locked away for the rest of her life and where her grave can be found today. Amazing woman!!!Product details

My First Thirty Years Gertude Beasley Gertrude Beasley 9781596547438 Books Reviews
Absolutely incredible read! I just can't say enough great things about Edna Gertrude Beasley's brave testimonial autobiography "My First Thirty Years". She is just so incredibly brave, blunt and honest about her life, and ahead of her time by 100 years.
Born in the late 1800's, this woman from Texas grew up in the most horrific conditions possible. Long before women's rights and the Me Too Movement, Beasley grew up amidst absolute squalid poverty, abuse, rape and at one point, homelessness. Despite the enormous adversity she was up against, Edna raised herself up out of her situation and went on to become an educator, author and advocate of women's rights.
Though it does not say this in the book, I came to find out that after publication of this book, she was committed to the Central Islip Psychiatric State Hospital (now demolished, but the cemetery still stands and she is buried there.) She was quite celebrated in her day until she wrote this book, and then sadly she was silenced for merely speaking her truth. This incredible woman is my hero.
This book was originally published by Contact Editions, Paris, in the 1920s. The author, Gertrude Beasley, caused quite a stir, both in Paris and back in her home state of Texas. She doesn't pull punches in this stinging memoir, and actual names are used, describing people from her upbringing in the Texas bible belt in unflattering ways. It's understandable it would not be well received. The book was banned and created controversy for frankly discussing taboo subject matter but the woman had to get a few things off her chest, and after reading this memoir, I can't blame her. Beasley disappeared not long after the book's publication but her contribution to Texas literature made her a legend. Although the book was hard to find, it's great to see it's easily found on in its unedited form. I have mixed feelings about her writing but for the most part she provides a very revealing window into the rural Texas landscape at the turn of the century. If you're interested in feminist writing or regional literature, this book is definitely worth reading. A Google search of Beasley's name will provide some recent information about what actually happened to her; the mystery of her disappearance solved.
Had been wanting this book for a long time. Never could find it in a library. Very glad to get it.
Very intense true story from another time from a woman that was intelligent and independent. After reading this book, you wanted to dig deeper into this woman's life to see what truly happened to her at the end of her life.
I hate that it's over. If only everyone was this honest about their life, we would not be weighted down with shame and condemnation.
